The Last Summer by Annie Sewell-Jennings

You can't talk about this fic without referring to On The Beach (film starring Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner). It was brilliantly made for its time, with fantastic cinematography and acting. Extremely creepy film based on the idea that a nuclear holocaust has taken place. When you consider that everyone you see in the film are literally the only people left alive on the entire planet, and they're all just waiting for the radioactive particles(certain death) to catch up to them in Australia, every last nuance that takes place is terrifying. They can only eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow...

This fic basically poses the idea that Buffy receives a vision of what is to come, but she realizes that a catastrophe like this is out of her hands to stop. No one believes her, so instead, she escapes for a temporary reprieve from death to Australia without the Scooby Gang. Everyone dies, of course. Humans go, then its the vampires' turn right after, as they've run out of their basic food source. Spike, running from the same spectre of doom while he can, finds a slayer whose lost all reason for survival. Its a beautiful story of two powerful creatures, realizing their own mortality, coming to terms with the loss of their world that took place in more ways than one. It even addresses the culpability of America in the nuclear arms race. Its a great piece of fanfiction for well, fanfiction. Buffy/Spike - again, pairing so not the point.

I discovered this fic when I was 13. I'm now 25, and still find it one of my favourite online reads.
